As you are just starting out, owning a large office might not be ideal at the moment. It is not rare for entrepreneurs to be working in the spare room, café or even a garage. You are being as thrifty as possible at this stage and leasing a private office would definitely burn a hole in your pocket.

The alternative for the majority of small business owners are serviced office or even co-working spaces. Not only does it lower your overhead, you are not to far off from the traditional office space. However, to work in a place where it is filled with different individuals can be interesting yet awkward. This article would help you adapt in a shared workspace.

1. Neat As A Pin

Remember, not all co-working space provides you with a cubicle. You are often surrounded with 2-3 other people and space can be a little tight. Creating a creative mess can be a distraction. If you insist on having your supplies, just make sure it is confined to your own personal area. Be sure to clear your possessions away at the end of the day.

2. Be Considerate

Being seated next to someone does not mean that they are available all the time. Always keep in mind that there is an invisible door between the two of you. Treat each other’s space with respect. If you wish to strike a conversation, simply ask if they have time to spare. Keep your habits to a bare minimum. This could also mean no more fidgeting in your seat, tapping the table so frequently and loud music. It could be a major distraction for those who are trying hard to concentrate on their work. If you are facing a problem, just address the issues before it gets out of hand.

3. Scents

When you are busy handling your business, you would find it difficult to leave your desk. Stay away from food that involves heavy spices, garlic or even onion. Highly flavored meals can quickly infiltrate the office and not to mention your breath. Try having your meals at the pantry or outside. Taking a break away from your desk would also help ease your mind. Also, some people may be allergic to scents, so you might want to refrain from using a strong perfume or cologne.

4. Sick Day

When you work in an enclosed space, germs can spread around easily. It is better to stay at home and just rest. If you insist on working and is suffering from the occasional flu or a mild sore throat, take note of your personal hygiene. Cover your mouth when coughing and do not leave used tissues lying around. Have a sanitizer on hand and wipe down your keyboard, desk and phone to prevent it from spreading.

5. Be Receptive

An open office plan often holds unique individuals with diverse personalities from different traits and backgrounds. It might be hard to adapt to the environment but it does not hurt to be open. Share ideas, hold casual conversations and you might be surprised with a tip or two. Focus on the positive vibe and always be prepared to learn something new.
